Do you really need travel insurance?

With summer upon us, many are planning family vacations and other adventures over the next few months. If you’re among those trailblazing travelers, particularly if you’re planning an international trip, you should be thinking about travel insurance.

We’ve heard it all before: What if I buy it, but I end up not needing it? What if I need it, but I didn’t buy it?

Travel insurance is just like other forms of insurance. It’s a safe investment that protects your monetary well-being. The bottom line is, if you wouldn’t drive a car without car insurance, you should think twice about traveling without travel insurance. Here are some scenarios we’ve seen first-hand.

1. The Expensive Trip

Imagine that you’ve saved and budgeted your money for years. Finally, you booked that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe for you and your significant other. But your flight was delayed, and then your bags were lost. Travel insurance can cover all of these unforseeable complications, so your hard-earned trip isn’t ruined.

In fact, Christopher Elliot of USA Today suggests getting travel insurance whenever you are spending more than $5,000 on a vacation. He calls this “a big-ticket purchase.” Of course, this number might be significantly higher or lower for you. Ultimately, though, if you are investing quite a bit of money into a vacation, when things go wrong, it can feel catastrophic. Travel insurance protects you and your investment.

2. The Delayed Trip

The list of reasons for which your flight can be delayed is seemingly endless. Mechanical issues, security problems, the weather, congested airline traffic, and late arrivals of other planes are just some of the common reasons. Unfortunately, some delays last several hours and sometimes even overnight. While airlines are obligated to get you on the next available flight, they are not required to provide other compensation. Travel insurance can pay for things such as food and lodging for the night.

Think about the time of year you are traveling, the likely weather in the areas where your flight will be taking off and landing, and that airport’s history of delays. You may find it is worth paying for travel insurance just to make sure that you do not end up spending the night sleeping in the airport, or paying extra money to book a hotel for the night.

3. The Complex-Itinerary Trip

Doesn’t it seem like the more complex something is, the more likely it is that something will go wrong? Well, the more places you have on your itinerary, the more likely something could go wrong on your trip. With more connections and more area traversed, there’s simply more opportunities for items to be lost or stolen. Travel insurance isn’t regional, so it has you covered.

4. The International Trip Without Adequate Medical Insurance

Even if you have good medical insurance in the United States, you may not have the same great coverage if you take a trip to China, Germany, Australia, or another international destination. For example, with very few exceptions, Medicare will not cover medical care or supplies outside of the United States and its territories.

Many other health-insurance companies have their own policies concerning whether or not they will cover you abroad, as well as what services are they’ll cover. It is a good idea to check with your health-insurance provider before your trip so you can get a better understanding of your international insurance coverage.

Of course, medical insurance might not be much of an issue if you are in good health and you are going to a relatively safe destination. If, though, you anticipate potential health problems or if you are going to a more dangerous location, it is worth considering travel insurance to cover any potential medical expenses.

Plus, even if you are good health, medical expenses cannot always be anticipated. If your insurance does not cover you in another country, your safest route is investing in travel insurance. Lack of sufficient medical-insurance coverage in another country could end up costing you thousands of dollars.

5. The “Maybe” Trip

Although you cannot always anticipate a change in plans, if you think there is a potential that you will either need to cancel or reschedule a trip, it is a good idea to make sure that you have travel insurance to avoid higher cancellation or rebooking fees. Yes, it will cost you slightly more for you tickets upfront, but it could save you money in the end.

6. The Dangerous Trip

Although there are a number of reasons you may need to make changes in your travel plans, one reason would be a potentially dangerous situation at your travel destination. The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consumer Affairs, actually has a place on their website where you can view Alerts and Warnings for international travel destinations. But keep in mind that if you knowingly go into a dangerous country or region, particularly one where the U.S. government has warned citizens to not go, your travel insurance will likely be void.

We understand that not everyone wants to buy travel insurance and not everyone feels like travel insurance is necessary. If you should decide that travel insurance is right for you, for any of the mentioned reasons, or for reasons of your own, it is important to remember three things.

Keep your paperwork. Whether you suffer an injury, have to file a police report, or have other issues on your trip, having the appropriate paperwork readily available can help to ensure your travel insurance covers all expenses and is able to do this in a timely fashion.

Travel insurance is not a ticket to do whatever you want and leave common sense behind, expecting your travel insurance provider to cover for you. This does not mean you cannot participate in activities such as bungee jumping, mountain climbing, or scuba diving with sharks. You would just need “extreme sports coverage.”

Not all travel insurance is exactly the same. Different policies cover different things. For example, some policies allow you to cancel or reschedule no matter the reason, while others are more strict.

Overall, one simple principle to operate by is this: The greater the coverage, the greater the initial cost, but the larger the payoff in the end if something does go wrong. It is important to check with your insurance agent to see what is and what is not covered by your policy. Our agents will work with you to find the policy which fits best with your needs and will work to clarify any confusion.

Among other things, Boston is famous for its quality bookstores. With high-tech e-book possibilities changing the way people read, many Bostonians and tourists still prefer the unique aura of an offline bookstore with its special scent of knowledge, magic, and discovery.

Online book retailers may be taking over the reader’s world, but a good old paper book is impossible to replace. Let’s take a closer look at Boston’s best bookstores that boast antique charm mixed with 21st-century convenience.

Brattle Book Shop

Brattle Book Shop is one of the largest and oldest bookstores in the entire country. When you step into the shop, you get a special feel of history and time at your fingertips. This antiquarian store has been selling used books since 1825.

Book lovers from all over the world come to this quiet part of downtown Boston to find rare masterpieces, collectibles, and encyclopedias packed with all types of knowledge.

If you plan on visiting this book shop, be ready to spend the entire day. Three floors with a huge variety of books will take a while to navigate. Parking near Brattle Book Shop is a challenge. So, if you are driving, look for nearby paid parking possibilities in advance.

Harvard Book Store

When you think about Boston, Harvard is one of the first things that comes to mind. So, it’s hardly a surprise that one of the oldest and most famous universities has an indie bookstore nearby.

Located right across from the famous Harvard Yard in Cambridge, Harvard Book Store is a great place to spend your afternoon. The shop offers new and old books as well as some Harvard University gifts, allowing you to kill two birds with one stone.

If you aren’t a big fan of closed spaces (after all, COVID-19 is still with us), you can browse the online catalog and order a curbside pickup. If you are ready to come in, you can get a unique chance to hang out with the Harvard and Cambridge students who fill up the cozy aisles regularly.

Brookline Booksmith

When you get tired of the loud downtown filled with students and tourists, consider driving down to Brookline. Besides being a great place to relax, this small yet beautiful and cozy town has an amazing bookshop.

Brookline Booksmith has been around since the middle of the last century, and it still has the same slogan “Dedicated to the fine art of browsing.” Browsing in-person!

The ground floor is devoted to new books, and the basement is packed with used copies at great prices. The background jazz and wood floors will certainly make you want to stay for a while.

After you’ve browsed the books, check out their handcrafted jewelry and journals, or see what’s going on at the Brookline book club.

Trident Book Café

Find out whether they require masks or simply bring a mask with you, just in case (requirements change all the time).

Browse the selection online to understand whether it’s something worth your time.

Popular bookstores may be very busy so call ahead and ask when their lowest traffic hours are.

Beware! Once you start walking down the aisles, you can lose track of time within seconds. If you need to be somewhere else that day, an alarm may help. Enjoy!

If you want to experience everything the United States has to offer, forget the tourist traps and mile-long lines to the same tired attractions. There are numerous other ways to slow down and explore. Take to the back roads and uncover small towns, interesting people, unique experiences, and pristine natural sites. Bright lights are replaced with a campfire and moonlight, and life is slow and easy. Are you ready to take a ride off the beaten path? Learn how below.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" src="https://www.verblio.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/iStock-948512452-500x327.jpg" alt="Back view mother and son tourists resting at camping in mountains, standing beside campfire and two tents, looking at night sky full of stars and Milky way, enjoying night scene.
It’s About the Journey, Not the Destination: Benefits of the Back Roads

Most of the time when you get in the car, you’ve got a set destination in mind, even when you’re on vacation. Oftentimes, there is no real fun in getting to your vacation spot. Instead, it’s a hurry. There’s a strict schedule to keep so you can complete the itinerary you’ve planned, plus you paid in advance. That’s something a back road traveler wouldn’t dream of doing. In fact, most don’t have a specific plan or destination in mind. It’s all about the journey and the discovery of new things along the way and the freedom to stop and enjoy the experience.

Slower-Paced Travel

City traffic can be nerve-wracking and stressful. There’s nothing like a peaceful drive down a country road with no particular destination in mind. As you drive past farms where cows roam the pastures and corn waves in the fields, it’s a real-world reminder of where our food really comes from. It’s the roads that carve through forests, up mountains, down through valleys, that are truly worth driving. They’re rarely straight so you have to slow down and pay attention, and that’s the point.

Traversing these back roads is an incredible way to travel locally and discover small communities that might otherwise be missed. You might find a new favorite restaurant, a breathtaking scenic overlook, or a new hiking spot.

Incredible Natural Wonders

Nature’s beauty is remarkable and that is profoundly evident when you travel at a slower pace down the side roads. You notice massive groves of ancient trees and wildflower meadows, untouched by time or man. Stunning views of lakes, mountains, and valleys appear around every corner. If you’re lucky, you might spot a waterfall right next to the road in the hills of Tennessee. Driving near one of the Great Lakes, or down the road near the Gulf of Mexico the smell of the water and sound of the waves calm the mind and soothes the spirit. Wind through the Appalachian Mountains and take a breath of fresh mountain air. Course up and down the west coast for a glimpse of nature’s stunning diversity. Wherever you go, one thing is certain: you’ll find beauty right outside your window.

Have you ever seen the ocean waves crashing, a river rushing by, or stood at the base of a tall waterfall? Ever walked down a path to find a beautiful whitetail deer standing a few feet away in beautiful profile? Have you ever climbed a 100 foot observation tower so you could overlook the forest? Or, stood at the base of a 65 foot waterfall like Benton Falls after hiking 1.5 miles through the forest? Those are the kinds of thrills and chills that make a traveler’s heart skip a beat. In the same way a thrill seeker who jumps out of airplanes can’t get enough, these kinds of travelers are constantly seeking those kinds of unique experiences in nature.

Wilderness Right Outside Your Window

Those back roads lead to places where you can encounter nature’s wilderness up close. Even a short drive through the countryside will bring you closer to these animals’ natural habitats. Depending on where you travel, you’ll encounter vastly different species local to the area, from alligators in Lousiana’s bayous to bald eagles in the mountains. There are literally thousands of places to experience unfiltered and uncaged nature. (Just be sure to be respectful of their natural living spaces and always mindful of your safety! The last thing you want is to meet a bear face-to-face because you forgot to properly store your snacks.)

2 Tips for Road Tripping Through the U.S.

1. Camp Instead of Hotel Hunting

When you’re traveling the back roads, campgrounds are the accommodation of choice. Everything from high-end, RV parks with water, electric, WIFI, cable TV to primitive campgrounds with nothing more than a spot to pitch a tent are available. Some cost as much as a hotel room every night. Low cost options range from $5 a night to $25 a night for basic campsite. Others, like West Tower Hunt Camp in the Osceola National Forest in Florida, are absolutely free!

Not sure where to camp?

A great way to find an off-the-beaten-track campground is to use a Free Campsites or Campendium. You’ll find camping areas all over the country that are either free, or very low cost, depending upon its amenities. Developed campgrounds are the most expensive but include amenities like water, showers, and electric hookups. Undeveloped areas are generally free and may only offer drinking water and a pit toilet. Dispersed camping, is also free and it literally entails popping a tent up somewhere in the forest, within guidelines.

Before you run off and set up a tent in the woods, take stock of your outdoor experience. If you’re a newbie who’s never camped before, consider a campground with some amenities close to home. Campers are a friendly lot and are happy to lend a hand if you need it. If you’re experienced and confident in your skills and have all the right equipment, get out there and do your thing.

2. Start Close to Home

You don’t need to embark on a cross-country road trip immediately (unless you want to!) For your first back road backpacking adventure, stick a little closer to home. This will help you learn the ropes while keeping you in familiar territory just in case! Anything you learn from these close-to-home trips can be applied to more ambitious outings down the line.

What Are You Waiting For?

As the spring flowers start to sprout and the snow fades away, the back roads beckon. Pack a tent, fill the cooler, and gas up. As you wind your way towards your campsite, take in the world around you. Turn off the air conditioning, open the windows and breathe in the fresh air. Set up camp, build a fire, cook a meal, and relax. Plenty of fresh air and exercise, followed by a good meal, pleasant company, cozy campfire, and a tent and the silence is only broken by the occasional hoot of an owl in the distance. These are the good things in life.

Though, you don’t have to flee to the beach or a ski resort to enjoy your stay in Granada. The city’s rich history, infectious culture, and diverse attractions will entice you to return to Granada every chance that you get. Whether you are enjoying a brief stopover in Granada or plan to spend several days or weeks, here are some things that you must do during your visit:

Visit the Alhambra

Whether it’s your first or fifth visit to Granada, you need to visit the Alhambra at least once. Even those who aren’t history buffs or don’t get excited about architecture will appreciate the magnificent compound. Alhambra’s genesis as a small fortress occurred in the 9th century, but came into its glory in the middle of the 19th century when Muslim emirs of the Nasrid Dynasty rebuilt the fortress and added the palace and gardens. Only 6,000 visitors may enter Alhambra each day, so entrance tickets sell out. You can purchase your tickets ahead of time here.

Don’t Skip the Generalife Gardens

Even if you visit during the winter months, you can get a sense of the picturesque gardens next to Alhambra; but, for the most beautiful display, visit the Generalife Gardens when the flora is in full bloom. Generalife is one of the only remaining and best preserved examples of Moorish gardens in Spain, which originally served as a place of rest for the emirs and sultans who lived at the palace. You can include admission to the gardens with your Alhambra ticket and easily add an extra hour of exploration onto your visit.

Explore the Albaicín

The Albaicín is the Moorish Quarter of Granada built during Muslim rule of the Iberian Peninsula. The area still maintains the white architecture and narrow streets characteristic of that time period. Locals and visitors alike flock to the Mirador de San Nicolas for the best views of the Alhambra from across the River Darrow. Although you can wander the streets during the day and find divine cafes and the Arab Baths, nighttime views should not be missed. A visit to the Albaicín pairs well with an outing to a flamenco show in nearby Sacramonte, the home of the gypsy (gitano) community in Granada.

Eat Some Tapas

Most travelers know that a trip to Spain means enjoying a glass of sangria, wine, or beer with some tapas, small appetizers or snacks, but Granada is one of the few locales that offers free tapas. You might find that some of the more touristy areas of the city may charge for tapas, but the majority of tapas bars and bodegas bring you a free snack with each drink that you order. Granada’s centrally located Realejo neighborhood is famous for its great tapas bars. This also gives you an opportunity to mingle with the locals.

Stay at the Luxurious Hotel Serena

Enhance your stay in Granada by staying with us at the centrally located Hotel Serena.

India is a land of diversity, and this is evident in the myriad festivals that are celebrated across the country. Every region has its own unique set of festivals, which reflect the local culture and traditions. Indian festivals are always full of color and pageantry. From the traditional costumes to the elaborate decorations, these events are truly spectacular to behold. Planning your trip around one of these festivals is a terrific way to experience the uniquely joyful cultural traditions of the region. In this guide, we’ll break down the sights and sounds of the three most spectacular galas the country has to offer.

Holi, nationwide, March 2023

Holi, known as the festival of sharing and love, or the festival of colors, is a two-day Hindu gala that will take place Wednesday, March 8, 2023. From its ancient origins as a ceremony performed by women to ensure a healthy and happy family, ‘Holika’ has morphed into a variety of festivities that tie themes of kinship and love together with a countrywide celebration of spring. The holiday also bridges in spiritual themes of good vs. evil to create a day when divisions are set aside and unity reigns supreme. For this reason, it is often called the “Festival of Love.”

Holi is typically marked by boisterous celebrations on the day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalgun, and is probably most famous for the colorful powders known as ‘gulal’ that are thrown on revelers. Legends abound about this tradition’s origins, but one popular rendition states that Lord Krishna didn’t like his blue-toned face, and was fearful that his true love Radha wouldn’t return his sentiments. His mother suggested that he could paint his face—or hers—any shade that he liked! This has garnered Holi a second popular nickname as the ‘Festival of Colors’.

Holi festivals across India

There’s no shortage of unique and enchanting Holi Festivals to take in. Here are some unique and enchanting Holi Festivals taking place across the country.

Widows Holi. The city of Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh is known for its connection to the Hindu god Krishna, and it is also home to the annual Widows Holi festival. While the specifics of the festival vary from year to year, it always takes place on the day after Holi, the Hindu festival of colors. On that day, the widows of Vrindavan come out to participate in color-filled celebrations. In recent years, the festival has become a symbol of hope and empowerment for Indian widows, who are often ostracized by society. The Widows Holi festival provides them with an opportunity to come together and celebrate their lives, even in the face of adversity. It is a reminder that, despite everything, they are still vibrant and alive.

: Pagal Baba Temple is within 10 minutes of another renowned Holi tradition, ‘Phaloon wali holi’ at Banke Bihari Temple. Here, flowers are thrown on local and international revelers alike by priests to create a bright kaleidoscope of color. Four days later, revelers can again get bathed in rich splashes of hued powders, soak in some blessing with holy water, and enjoy celebratory chanting to close out the temple’s week-long celebrations. The great news is that both of the Pagal Baba and Banke Bihari temples are within 50 miles of the exquisite Taj Mahal.

Hola Mohalla (Warrior Holi):This unique spin on Hola dates back to 1701 and foregoes the beautiful colors of ‘gulal’ in favor of astounding feats of agility performed by Sikhs of the region. The competitions and shows take place at the architecturally stunning Sikh temple called Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib in the city of Anandpur, Punjab. This “Holy City of Bliss” comes alive with valiant displays of archery, wrestling, and weaponry alongside intricately crafted traditional costumes, poetry, music, horsemanship, and a dazzling military parade. Local volunteers known as ‘langars’ graciously staff the kitchens, which serve vegan and vegetarian fare to festival goers, and the temple is open to people of all faiths to tour.

Ganesh Chaturthi, Maharashrtra and beyond, September 2023

The Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular 11-day Hindu festival that celebrates the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom and good fortune. The festival typically lasts for 11 days, and is observed with much fanfare and devotion. The festival originated about 125 years ago in Pune, Maharashtra as a peaceful way to unite the Indian people in solidarity against British rule. The festivals have spread out from the city and across the state, as well as to such areas as Dehli in the country’s north and Tamil Nadu in the south. If you are in these areas during early September of this year, you’ll want to be sure to participate in this joyous festival time.

On the first day of the festival, an idol of Lord Ganesha is installed in homes or public squares, and special puja ceremonies are conducted to honor the deity. Over the course of the next ten days, there are special puja ceremonies held each morning and evening, and devotees can be seen carrying small clay idols of Lord Ganesha through the streets in procession. Through the duration of the festival, devotees offer prayers, flowers and sweet foods to Lord Ganesha. On the final day of the festival, the idol is carried in a grand procession and then immersed into a body of water to mark the continuous ebb and flow of life. In 2023, this celebration begins Monday, September 18, 2023.

Popular Ganesh Chaturthi festivals

Although the festival is held in many areas across the country, there are two key areas within Maharashtra that offer visitors an awe-inspiring view into the origins and evolution of this unifying event that draws thousands of international guests each year. The singular experience has been likened to a public party full of fun socializing, celebratory spirituality, and delicious local cuisine.

How To Create An Unforgettable Christmas-Themed Vacation For Your Family

A themed vacation is a great way to combine the holiday season with the family’s favorite holiday memories. After all, this is the beauty of a themed vacation; the joining of personal interests with relevant travel and sightseeing. If your family loves the idea of Christmas or you simply desire a break from the traditional, planning a Christmas-themed vacation can be an exciting adventure.

Wine lovers may enjoy a summertime trek through great wine regions, which combine superb wine and cheese tastings with some of the most stunningly beautiful landscapes in the world. A family on a Lewis and Clark expedition in autumn may traverse magnificent waterways and explore varied wildlife and terrains.

The winter season offers a great time to create an unforgettable Christmas vacation for families. Before you shrink back at the thought of more crowded streets filled with bustling shoppers or the sounds and sights of tinsel, and bells, and all that glitters (ad infinitum) – think again!

A vacation with a subtle Christmas theme can offer just the right amount of holiday infusion along with quiet rest, beautiful photo-op scenery, fresh crisp air, a bit of exercise, historical references, and ample holiday memories.

8 Starter Ideas To A Themed Christmas Vacation

The best themed vacations will begin with and center around either a novel idea and/or a personally relevant statement. In this case, the relevant statement is Christmas, but the novel idea is brought forth from your family’s unique and personal holiday favorites.

Here are a few ideas to gather geographical location possibilities:

Favorite family Christmas movie, story, or author

Historical Christmas traditions to explore

Quaint towns famous for celebrating Christmas

Serene and quiet winter locations for family bonding

Locations with quirky Christmas-related names

Musical or other culturally relevant Christmas locations

Popular Christmas sports or entertainment venue

Existing Christmas sightseeing tours

1. Taos, New Mexico

Want to experience the magic of the North Pole? Don’t travel north… head south instead and find yourself in Taos, New Mexico, a warm, welcoming town that is dripping in yuletide. With a massive arts and crafts fair that is followed up with holiday festivities galore, Taos’s historic streets are lit up by whimsical luminaries and crackling bonfires, beckoning you to cuddle up with those you love most.

With a casual, hometown vibe and comforting atmosphere, you will feel right at home around the bonfire, even amongst strangers, because no one in Taos stays a stranger for long.

2. Bali, Indonesia

Bali may not be the first place to cross your mind when you think about capturing the “holiday spirit”, but Christmas is, after all, all about magic… and Bali has magic in spades.

With exotic beaches, mysterious islands and vibrant temples at every turn, if you are looking for an off-beat way to spend the season, you will find it all in Bali. If you want something that feels more familiar, simply travel west to explore the Christian enclaves of Palasari and Belimbingsari… you won’t be “sari.” (Get it?)

3. Antigua, Guatemala

There is no place that honors the traditional roots of Christmas quite like Guatemala. Drenched in history and a rich appreciation of Christian roots, Antigua is truly one of the most inspirational spaces on the globe in which to spend your holiday.

Here, everyone and every building is lit up with Christmas spirit. Featuring Spanish colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and tiny, unique shops, you will never be at a loss for adventure… or the perfect gift. If you want to experience Christmas, the real, true meaning of the season, drop anchor here. You’ll be glad you did.

4. Gramado, Brazil

Gramado is not just another little dot on the map. It is, in fact, the Christmas capital of Brazil, hosting the area’s largest Christmas festival with plenty of experiences ready for the taking. Here, you will be entertained from morning until night with extravagant parades, live music, traditional holiday plays and over-the-top tree lightings.

Bring your camera and your inner child… they will both be put to good use.

5. Christmas Island

Ah, who could have a dream Christmas travel list without a place called Christmas Island… but don’t let the name fool you. The island has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. It was, however, founded on Christmas Day which is where this beautiful island, drenched in flora and fauna, got its namesake. Scattered along the Indian Ocean, each year millions upon millions of red crabs migrate to the locale to spawn.

It is beautiful. It is awe-inspiring. It is captivating… and a little bit creepy – but you’ll quickly get over it when you take a diving lesson into the crystal-blue waters to explore some of the best displays of sea life on the planet.

6. Singapore

Unique does not begin to describe Christmas in Singapore which boasts of one of the best and most unusual Christmas markets in all the world. Here, perfectly scattered lights illuminate the Orchard Road shopping district which beckons patrons to its doors with truly festive decorations that will leave you feeling like you stepped inside a movie screen. The area also has plenty of festive events which you will find by heading towards the Singapore River. If you can swing the extra time away from work, stay for New Year’s Eve and be treated to a fireworks display that rivals Times Square.

Whether you spend your Christmas floating on the seas of Christmas Island or walking the cobblestone streets of Guatemala, the Christmas spirit will always find you when you are with the ones you love most… no matter where your travels take you.

St. Thomas holds about forty-eight percent of the entire Virgin Island population, so deciding what to do on a day trip can be overwhelming. If you want both culture and relaxation, here’s a suggestion on how to spend your day on St. Thomas.

Start your day in the Charlotte Amelie district, where you’ll find a lot of cultural and historical landmarks of the Virgin Islands.

Blackbeard’s Castle

Experience the power of this 1679 protective watch tower, either by taking a walking tour or checking it out on your own. Blackbeard’s Castle stands on the highest point of Government Hill, so you’ll also have a great view.

Fort Christian and the St. Thomas Museum

If you’re interested in visiting a second landmark, check out Fort Christian. Over the centuries, the fort has served as a town center, a government building, and even a jail. These days it’s home to the St. Thomas Museum, full of photography and art that represents the island.

St. Thomas Synagogue

This is the second oldest synagogue under the American Flag, and the oldest synagogue still in use. The menorah there, dating back to the 11th century, is even older than the synagogue itself. The most interesting aspect is the sand floor. The reasons behind the sand floor are unknown, though many believe the sand is there to represent the Israelite journey through the desert.

Now it’s time to head to Northside for some well earned relaxation.

Magens Bay and Magens Bay Arboretum

Now that you’ve had your culture and history fix, spend a few hours on the white sand beach of Magens Bay. There is also a beautiful, five-acre arboretum close by, and a train to take you there.

St. Thomas is rich with both cultural and leisurely activities. For more ideas on how to spend your day on any of the islands we visit, or to book a trip, please contact us.

With the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, only a year and a half away, some are worried about the recent thefts on the beaches where many Olympic tourists will be spending time in August, 2016. The problem along the Rio beaches is something called arrastoes, or “dragnet.” In these dragnets, groups of youths run through the beach crowd, causing a commotion as they steal cell phones, jewelry, and other valuables.

Fortunately, Brazilian police are dealing with the issue in several ways. About 800 police officers were deployed to patrol the beaches where tens of thousands of visitors flock each weekend. Helicopters and a mobile surveillance unit were brought in to provide added security to the beaches. Roadblocks were created where the police can stop buses traveling from poorer communities and where they can randomly frisk passengers.

Currently, police are detaining between 100 and 150 individuals each weekend, with roadblocks being the most effective in dealing with the problem. The police cannot deal with the thefts on their own, though. Whether you are planning to come to the beaches during the 2016 Olympic Games, you want to come for a vacation at another time, or you already live in Brazil but you want to visit the beach, there are several things you can do to avoid being a victim of a beach theft.

Leave your valuables at the hotel.

Only bring what is absolutely necessary with you to the beach. Leave extra money and jewelry at your hotel. The less you have with you, the less someone can take. You may also want to consider limiting the amount of valuables you bring with you on vacation at all. Leave unnecessary items at home.

Pick less congested areas.

Of course, this might be nearly impossible during the tourist season, but when possible, avoid areas where there seems to be a lot of excitement, or where there is a commotion. In the same sense, be aware of those around you. Do not be afraid to move to another location along the beach if a group near you is making you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Be aware of the location of group members and valuables.

Some people in your group are probably going to want to enjoy the water, while others in the group enjoy sunbathing or reading a book on the beach. You will probably get separated, but you should be aware of the location of other members of your group. If a commotion should start, draw close together. This can help to ensure the safety of group members as well as keep your valuables protected. You may want to consider things like safety pinning your room key to your swimsuit or other clothing, as well as keeping valuables securely attached to you and out of the sight of others.

Even with the more frequent thefts along Brazilian beaches, there is no reason tourists cannot enjoy their vacation and feel safe as long as they take the proper precautions.

Hotel dining is meant to offer convenience, but in most cases isn’t that memorable. Orlando establishments turn that stereotype on its head with some exceptional options for dining without ever leaving the confines of the resort. Some of the area’s finest restaurants are located in hotels. They boast celebrity chefs, million dollar views, and of course great food and wine.

Here’s a rundown of places that make dining in better than going out:

Todd English’s Blue Zoo – Disney World Swan and Dolphin

The exquisite Jeffrey Beers-designed restaurant is a favorite of business travelers, but families flock there as well because they can take advantage of complimentary child care in Camp Dolphin while enjoying a relaxing meal. The star chef’s signature property has received a coveted AAA four diamond award as well as designation as a Fodor’s Choice.

Emeril’s Tchoup Chop – Loew’s Royal Pacific Resort

Lagasse’s restaurant at Universal Orlando takes its name from Tchoupitoulas, the New Orleans street where his flagship eatery is located. Tchoup Chop features Asian-Polynesian cuisine. The dining room is lined by a large reflecting pool that adds to the ambience.

The Venetian Room – Caribe Royale
It’s hard to imagine that such an elegant restaurant could be hidden in the pink monstrosity that is Caribe Royale. The Venetian Room is AAA four diamond ranked and routinely voted the most romantic restaurant in Orlando. This place is all about service with nice touches like an amuse bouche to start and a tiny sorbet between courses to cleanse the palate.

Victoria and Albert’s – Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Snagging a table at the crown jewel of Disney dining is next to impossible, but those lucky enough to enjoy an evening there rave about the experience. Everything from start to finish is perfection in this elegant five-star dining room.

Norman’s – Ritz Carlton Orlando

Star chef Norman Van Aken’s namesake restaurant features New World cuisine served in a beautiful lakeside setting. Tables have stunning views of the lake or golf course. The food too is unparalleled in its execution.

deep blu Seafood Grille – Wyndham Resort Bonnet Creek

A raw bar, sushi and the freshest seafood selections in town make this gem in the relatively new resort among Orlando’s best. It received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2014.

Napa – Hyatt Regency

It stands to reason that Orlando’s nicest hotel, the former Peabody, would also have one of its finest restaurants. Napa is all about the wine and servers can assist diners with making the perfect pairings.

The Boheme – Grand Bohemian Hotel

The downtown restaurant’s menu is highly eclectic, befitting its name. The Sunday Jazz Brunch is one of Orlando’s best-kept secrets and a great way to cap off a vacation.

Wolfgang Puck’s Café and Dining Room

Celebrity chef Puck’s haven for foodies in Downtown Disney’s Westside is consistently ranked as the best value for guests using the Disney Dining Plan. Although not technically in a hotel, it’s walkable from Saratoga Springs Resort and an easy boat launch trip from Port Orleans. The café is quick service while the dining room offers more upscale selections and full service.

Bull & Bear – Waldorf Astoria

This outpost of the famed Manhattan restaurant was recently voted Best Fine Dining establishment by Orlando Home & Leisure magazine. Big juicy steaks and the famous Veal Oscar are the go-to choices at this clubby dining room.

Spencer’s for Steaks and Chops – Hilton Orlando

Locally sourced prime beef and fresh-caught seafood are the stars at this upscale establishment near SeaWorld and the Orlando Convention Center. Guests who check in on Facebook or Foursquare receive a wine upgrade, which is hard to refuse considering a bottle of red makes everything taste better.

While visits to iconic destinations such as Mont Saint-Michel, the Palace of Versailles, and the Eiffel Tower are extraordinary experiences in their own rights, some tourists crave to leave the guidebook behind and take in cultural sites off the beaten path. In the case of Père Lachaise, this road less travelled takes the shape of a cobblestone path through a history buff’s paradise.

Upon originally opening in 1804 as the East Cemetery of the 20th arrondissement, Père Lachaise contained a mere thirteen graves. Due in equal parts to its location and its lack of a blessing by the Roman Catholic Church, there was slow growth in the number of burials during its first few years. The first noteworthy tomb did not arise until 1814, with the re-burial of Pierre Abélard and Héloïse d’Argenteuil, together in their lavish tomb.

The story of Abélard and d’Argenteuil is well-known in French culture: their forbidden love affair and the letters they wrote to each other for years after their separation. The legend goes that while the couple was forced to part ways during their time on Earth, they were buried in the same grave so that they could be together forever in the afterlife. To this day, the site remains popular, with many visitors leaving letters on the tomb in hopes of finding true love.

Some of Père Lachaise’s most visited graves include those of several historically significant Frenchmen, such as Jean de la Fontaine, Chopin, Georges Bizet, and Molière. In the past century, this list has grown to include iconic celebrities such as Yves Montand, Simone Signoret, and Édith Piaf. Each of these plots is crafted to be just as unique as the soul it immortalizes, creating an elegant combination of understated tombstones and lavish monuments. Pilgrimages are made year-round to visit the gorgeous gravesites of these cultural icons, placing Père Lachaise among the leading historical sites to visit in France.

Aside from famous individuals, Père Lachaise also honors victims of infamous tragedies. Over the years, several memorials have also been built, commemorating an array of misfortunes. Notably, nine statues have been erected in memory of the Holocaust’s concentration camps, with skeletal figures eternally testifying to the inhumanity inflicted upon their victims. Nearby, World War II monuments commemorate those who died in combat, having fought to free the innocent. In recent times, monuments have been erected in honor of smaller-scale tragedies, such as the three memorials honoring the victims of UTA flight 772, Flash Airlines Flight 604, and West Caribbean Airways Flight 708. These monuments, commemorating tragedies both large and small, allow visitors to relate to these events and understand their importance to French culture.

While Père Lachaise is a cemetery, it is not simply a place of mourning. It is regarded as such an important site to visit in France because of how intensely it connects tourists to the culture of the country. Elegant cobblestone paths take visitors back in time to France’s past, allowing them to feel both the sorrow and the respect that Frenchmen have for these people, and return them to the present with memories that will last for a lifetime.
