Plagiarism can really ruin your day — and your SEO.

When you outsource your content, plagiarism is a constant enemy. You’re putting the fate of your website’s domain authority in the hands of your writers, and you hope they take this responsibility as seriously as you do. Impactful copywriting has the potential to rocket your company to new heights, but plagiarized content can plummet your rankings.

Because we operate a content marketplace, everyone at Verblio has given the plagiarism problem a lot of thought and attention. We’ve dedicated time and resources to ensure our clients receive original content. Here’s how.

First, let’s define plagiarism

We don’t take plagiarism lightly, and neither should you. For starters, plagiarism has serious legal consequences, and let’s not forget the SEO ramifications of using plagiarized content. Your business is unique, and your copywriting should be, too.

But what really counts as plagiarism?

Merriam-Webster defines the transitive verb plagiarize as “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own.” This features one very important parenthetical. Not only does plagiarism encompass verbatim plagiarism where direct words are lifted from one article and put into another without proper citation, but it also alludes to paraphrasing plagiarism where ideas or structures are unfairly mirrored.

Why does this matter? Duplicate content (both verbatim and paraphrased) gets dinged by search engines. Pages will often all be downgraded in rankings because their informational impact is lessened by the existence of the duplicate works, and, in some cases, may not be indexed at all.

This inevitably impacts the site’s traffic as well as more nebulous things like E-A-T. (There’s nothing really authoritative or trustworthy about plagiarized content, is there?)

At Verblio, we take a comprehensive approach to combating plagiarism that looks at both verbatim carbon copies and uncited paraphrasing to ensure our customers receive only high-quality, original works.

3 ways Verblio stops plagiarism

It’s true that writing is challenging. It takes time and effort. Plagiarism, for some, is the easy way out. (And yes, we’ve seen the TikToks about letting AI writing tools write for you to generate passive income, but we’ve also seen why AI doesn’t really work like that.)

Trustworthy writers, however, aren’t just out to make a quick buck. Our platform is filled with brilliant writers looking forward to sharing their words with you!

We’ve designed three-part plagiarism detection and prevention strategy to supply our customers with writing you can trust.

1. Automated processes catch plagiarism early

Before a piece of content provided by Verblio writers ever reaches our customers, it is processed by the leading plagiarism checker in the industry. By comparing new documents to billions of web pages, this process identifies strings of words shared with copywriting that predates the content being scanned. You’ve likely heard of tools like these available for free (think: Grammarly’s free plagiarism checker).

A check like this is a necessary step in detecting stolen writing, but it isn’t the only step.

The trouble with many plagiarism detectors is that they look singularly for verbatim plagiarism, and often do so without any contextual analysis. It will flag any shared set of words that appears on another site, even if you’re writing about string cheese and not string theory.

Plagiarism is a complex issue that requires a complex solution.

In-line with Verblio’s commitment to removing plagiarism from our platform, we continue to experiment with cutting-edge tech to provide the most comprehensive plagiarism detection possible. This means we’re looking at both verbatim plagiarism and paraphrasing concerns to stop copy spinning and patch writing from entering our marketplace through enhanced analysis by pairing these tools with our own internal measures to detect plagiarized content.

Bottom line? Verblio uses a combination of industry standard and leading edge technology alongside our own proprietary systems to eliminate plagiarized copywriting.

2. Manual audits provide constant visibility

If our automated services aren’t enough to quell your concerns, don’t worry. We’re not done yet.

Our dedicated team maintains around the clock visibility to our writers’ submissions to track unusual behavior and low-quality content — both two massive red flags for plagiarism. Plus, our proprietary internal systems provide additional surveillance.

In the unlikely event that a customer has a concern about the quality of their received content, our team is readily available for customer support, writer management, and some good, old-fashioned sleuthing to get to the bottom of the situation.

3. Verblio’s one-strike policy against plagiarism

It’s not easy to become a Verblio writer.

You must go through a rigorous onboarding experience that includes passing a plagiarism exam and signing a pledge against plagiarism. If a writer submits a piece of copywriting with plagiarized components, they will be immediately removed from our marketplace.

Our no-tolerance approach allows customers to interact only with serious copywriters who are passionate about creating thought-provoking content.

Plagiarism sucks. Verblio doesn’t.

If you’re in the market for truly unique content at scale, you’re in the right place. (Or should we say the write place?) At Verblio, we’re committed to providing original content to our customers, and so is our team of over 3,000 thoroughly vetted contributors. When you’re ready for your site to make an impact, get in touch. This is what we do best.

What is it about certain words in the English language that make us cringe? How could one word make readers or listeners feel repulsed? Beyond curse words and words used to make one feel offended, there are innocent words that evoke a feeling of disgust simply because they sound ugly.

Some words have a higher rate of stomach-turn factor than others, whether their definitions intend for that or not. From Verblio to you, in no particular order, we present the ugliest words in the English language.

THE UGLIEST WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: OUR TOP PICKS

REGURGITATE

Talk about stomach-turning! Regurgitate is a fancy word for “puke”. This conjures up visions of mother birds horking up chewed worms to feed to their demanding wide-beaked young. And is it any coincidence that “regurgitate” rhymes with abominate? It also makes no sense without the prefix re-. How could anyone actually throw up in reverse anyway?

CHUNK

Maybe it’s the final sound of nk that tips the balance from prosaic to disgusting. Or maybe it’s because our ’90s cartoon friends Beavis and Butthead liked to use the term chunk in connection to vomiting, as in to “hurl chunks”. Gross? Well, not if you’re a hungry baby bird we suppose, but nonetheless, we feel this word is just, well…icky.

SCAB

This is another ugly sounding word, probably because of its combo sound of sc- followed by -ab. A scab is nothing but dried, congealed blood. Then there is its pejorative connotation of nonunion workers crossing picket lines to work when others are on strike. Any derogatory word used to hurt or harm automatically qualifies it as an ugly word – with or without a second meaning of dry, crusty blood.

PULCHRITUDE

Any word ending in -tude, meaning displaying the characteristics of, instantly segregates it from everyday speech. After all, when was the last time you said, “Ah, the pulchritudinous scenery…”. Pulchritude is another word for beauty, from the Latin for physical comeliness. Yet it has the ironic characteristic of coming nowhere near the concept of beauty. It sounds like something you’d read in a legal report or a jury trial. “Ladies and gentlemen: My client is totally innocent of the charges of pulchritude…”.

CREPUSCULAR

Like pulchritude, crepuscular, with its middle letters forming the word pus, actually has a more charming meaning: of, like or active in the twilight. However, it also sounds like a term that could be used in a malpractice lawsuit, For example: “a crepuscular accident causing the formation of suppurating scabs.” There is no such thing, but we threw in the term suppurating, because it has to do with the discharge of pus. (And the word is far more pleasant sounding than crepuscular.)

Like pulchritude, crepuscular, with its middle letters forming the word pus, actually has a more charming meaning. Its definition is of, like, or active in the twilight. Yet, it also sounds like a term that could be used in a malpractice lawsuit. For example, “a crepuscular accident causing the formation of suppurating scabs.” There is no such thing, but we threw in the term suppurating because it has to do with the discharge of pus. (And it is far more pleasant sounding than crepuscular.)

MOOCH

Where did we get this unpleasant sounding word? Did someone remove the letter s from smooch and come up for a term that goes from meaning a chaste peck to that sucking sound of your least favorite relative “borrowing” money? As ugly as it sounds, however, this versatile word can be both a verb and a noun, the latter referring to your relative, the former to what he does right before you receive a grateful smooch.

PUGILIST

Among the many pretentious words in our language, this one combines an ugly sound with a euphemism for a person who fights. The ist suffix doesn’t help soften the harsh hissing sound. It reminds us of the boos and hisses at a boxing match where the bloodthirsty crowd doesn’t get its fill of crepuscular activity.

QUARK

Sounding somewhat like the noise a baby bird might make choking on a regurgitated slug, quark is a surprisingly pithy scientific term. That would be because most scientific terms sound, uh, scientific. Judge for yourself: In physics a quark is defined as “any of a number of subatomic particles carrying a fractional electric charge, postulated as building blocks of the hadrons.” What is a hadron? We’re glad you asked. A hadron is a subatomic particle and it includes baryons and mesons that work together. Unfortunately, our definitions disappear into a black hole, where we can mostly agree that quark is an ugly word.

GESTATIONAL

This medical term has to do with the miracle of pregnancy. Doesn’t such a beautiful thing as carrying a child deserve a less-ugly-sounding term? We sure think so!

FETID

This word just plain stinks. The definition of fetid is smelling extremely unpleasant. Fetid odors can also prompt the hurling of chunks (also known as regurgitation), which is why it rounds out our top 10 picks of ugliest words.

HONK

Bonus! Because we couldn’t stop at ten. As another word ending in nk, and definitely detracting from any pretense of pulchritude, honk is both ugly and inaccurate. In plain English, honk sounds revolting, and it doesn’t do a great job of portraying the sound of a car’s horn.

WHY ARE THESE WORDS UGLY?

How ugly or beautiful words sound may have a lot to do with what our mouths are doing when we speak them. Think about what your mouth and tongue are forming as you make a “pu” sound, for example. It’s a plosive: your lips tighten to stop air flow and then you expel air.

Go ahead—do it now while you’re thinking about it.

Some people suspect plosives remind us of involuntary noises that our hunter-gatherer ancestors made long ago if they inadvertently put poisonous, bitter berries in their mouths. (Hey, evolutionary value!)

It’s one theory of why words like pus are almost universally disliked. They feel wrong—or even disgusting and dangerous—in our mouths. They feel like words that should be spit out. In fact, we are expelling the ugliest words by saying them.

BACK TO THE ROOTS?

Many words from the Romance languages have a more flowing, euphonious sound, and thus give us prettier-sounding words. By the same token, many Germanic words that have made their way into the English language, convey the opposite—a hard, striking, uninviting sound. Yet so many have pleasant, even beautiful meanings despite their tone when spoken. Now this theory may not fit in all cases. After all, on our list, both pugilist and pulchritude are two clear examples from Latin and Greek.

What’s the final consensus? The reason we find particular words in the English language so ugly probably has a lot to do with the way our mouths and throats behave when we form those words, a little bit to do with their origins, and a little dependent on context, as well (the word “hate,” for example). It could be they remind us of something unpleasant. Did your ugliest words make it to our list? Let us know!

1. Am I eligible to write for Verblio?

To write for Verblio, you must be 18 years or older, be legally allowed to work in the U.S., and have a valid U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). We require a W9 in order to prove that you are who you say you are. We do not require that your physical work location be in the U.S., so if you are a U.S. citizen but would like to work from overseas, feel free to apply.

Writers will need to pass a rigorous grammar test and plagiarism training module, in addition to completing a sample to be reviewed by our in-house team. If your sample does not meet our basic quality standards, you will not be accepted as a writer. However, if we think you’ll be successful with Verblio, you’ll be able to offer that sample for sale to a customer immediately.

We do not require that you have previous experience as a professional writer. If you do, however, you’ll likely move up through our levels much more quickly to access higher paid jobs. We personally review each writer’s first post and then we’ll review your work again once you’ve completed a few jobs and gotten the hang of our platform. If your work is exceptional, we may offer you an early upgrade to longer-form requests.

2. How do I get paid?

We pay invoices via bank direct deposit every Monday. There is no minimum or maximum invoice. We use bank deposits exclusively, so you will need to have a valid bank account in order to get paid. You can read more about how writer pay works in our Writer Pay Help Portal.

Pay is based on the size of the job, which you will see before beginning work for that customer. You will be able to invoice for a job only once the customer has purchased your content. You do need to submit an invoice in order to get paid.

When you begin, you will only have access to our shortest jobs. As you write more at Verblio, you will gain points in our system to get access to higher-paying opportunities at higher word counts. Pay starts at $11.50 for a 300-400 word post and increases beyond that, based on the customer’s desired word length. We offer jobs from 300 to 3000 words.

3. What type of customers will I be writing for?

One great thing about being a writer for Verblio is the huge variety of customers we have. From real estate to manufacturing to blockchain to yoga, we’re pretty sure you’ll have no trouble finding someone to write for.

4. What types of jobs do you offer?

We now offer several different types of written content, including blog posts, newsletters, web content, ebooks, white papers, and more. We also work on large one-time projects in editing, product descriptions, and more.

For all of our jobs, you’ll be writing on behalf of businesses, which means you’ll be writing for their audience and from their perspective. This is professional writing, and we expect your content to be error-free, polished, and appropriate to the customer’s voice and tone.

5. Do I have to pay you in order to write for you?

Absolutely not. On the contrary, we pay you to write for us.

6. Do you hire editors? Translators?

Not officially. On occasion, we offer these types of jobs on an individual basis. However, these are uncommon and in order to be chosen for them, you’ll need to be a high level writer. We don’t currently offer opportunities for people who are only interested in roles as editors and/or translators.

7. Do I need experience in writing?

We welcome writers from all backgrounds and with different levels of experience to be a writer for Verblio. Writers who are just starting out in their careers in freelance writing and seasoned professionals alike should apply.

However, we do like to set some expectations: Professional and highly experienced writers will likely move up to higher-paying jobs more quickly than less experienced writers. We personally review your content at several stages and if your content is on point, you can earn early access to higher level jobs. All writing should be thoughtful, conscientious, and inclusive. If you’re new to content writing and writing for businesses, it may take you a little while to get up to speed and earn the type of income you’re looking for.

8. Can I put my name on the content that I sell?

No. Once a Verblio customer purchases your content, they own the rights to that content. You may not link to or republish that content in any form—to do so would be plagiarism and a violation of their copyright.
We’re word people, and the global pandemic has spawned a lot of new words and phrases. For example, what do you call the process of giving your pets professional titles? Are those pawmotions?

There was an SNL sketch in the 80s about “sniglets” – words that ought to be words but aren’t. (Sniglet is itself a sniglet.) We’ve found that naming things can be cathartic. So, we created a Slack channel dedicated to COVID-themed words that should exist already. There was lots of discussion. The below collection represents the team’s favorites.

In this post, we’re going to talk about something that should be in every content marketer’s playbook: guest blogging.

If you’re unfamiliar with the practice, or simply need a tune-up, this post will cover everything you need to know to get started.

Let’s dive in!

What is Guest Blogging?

Guest blogging is simply writing and publishing a blog that appears on a third-party website. It’s a very popular practice, and is seen as an effective way to promote your brand, improve your SEO (through backlinks from high-authority domains), and elevate your thought leadership status. You can think of it like the social currency of the internet.

And it really is a well-used tactic. According to Orbit Media, a whopping 65.5% of bloggers guest post as a regular part of their routine.

Considering there’s an estimated 4.4 million blog posts published every day, that’s a lot of guest posting that’s flying around the web.

But that raises a question: does guest blogging really work?

Let’s talk about that.

Does Guest Blogging work?

In short, yes.

But like most other digital marketing endeavors, there’s a caveat to any blanket statement about the effectiveness of guest blogging. It works when it’s done consistently and correctly, and even then you may not get the results you were hoping for.

Here’s what we mean:

A recent study looked at 239 guest posts that were published across 78 blogs. They collected the amount of referral traffic that each article generated, and found half saw only 10 to 100 referred visitors to the brand’s website.

Which isn’t bad — but it’s not necessarily what we’d call great, either.

So while guest posting is generally seen as an effective best-practice, you have to be strategic about the topic you select, the blog you write for, and how you pitch your company in that post. It’s possible to get a decent amount of traffic, but you have to balance a lot of variables — and even then it’s not a certainty that traffic will come your way.

Case in point — GrooveHQ posted a very insightful article about their guest posting endeavors on some very popular marketing platforms. The results differed greatly based on where they posted.

Think of it this way, though: They still got visitors and leads from these guest posts!

But in reality, answering the question of whether guest blogging works requires looking past some of the obvious metrics, and instead talking about some slightly more intangible benefits of guest blogging — which is what we’re going to discuss next.

Benefits of Guest Blogging

Yes — you do have the opportunity to gain traffic and leads from a targeted audience through guest blogging. But that’s only part of the larger whole.

The rest of the benefits are more focused on intangibles, like creating engaging content that says something helpful in a helpful way, boosting thought leadership, improving your brand awareness, and building relationships with other high-level marketers who share your appreciation for your craft.

You can leverage these relationships and opportunities to gather helpful feedback, insights on what your brand can do better, and fish for future guest posting opportunities.

All of these are desirable — but the benefits don’t stop there. There’s one more important aspect to consider:

Backlinks.

If you’re unfamiliar with backlinks, it’s really fairly simple. When a blog post on another website links to yours, that’s considered a backlink. From what SEO experts know, Google views these as a “vote of confidence” in your site, and is thus a major ranking factor in their algorithm. That’s not to say it’s the end-all of SEO factors, but it’s definitely included in the mix.

So how does guest blogging factor into backlinks? Well, depending on where you post your guest article, you can easily acquire a backlink from a high-authority website. Guest posting on the regular is an effective way to build up a beefier backlink profile, which lets Google know you’re worth paying more attention to.

And guest blogging does work for link building. Depending on the type of content you post, a single guest article can boost your link acquisition by anywhere from 40%-110%.

That’s not an insignificant benefit — and it definitely proves that guest blogging is here to stay for marketers.

So with that in mind, let’s discuss how you can get started with your own guest blogging efforts!

How To Become A Guest Blogger

Now that you know why guest blogging is important, let’s talk more about how to get started.

There are plenty of places to start this, but let’s go for the obvious choice: you have to start by writing something! (or by having it written for you)

Having a pre-written post when you start to pitch publications will make things much easier at first. You’ve already put the work in, know the topic, and can send a ready-made article as soon as you get approval.

But writing the content isn’t the final hurdle. You also have to know who to pitch, how to pitch them, and be willing to wade through a lot of rejections.

When it comes to these questions, there are two general approaches:

Blunt Force/Cold Pitch — This approach is simple: find as many emails as you can from publications you want to guest post with, then send your blog post pitch to them. You may not get many bites, but it’s certainly worth the effort if you haven’t done any guest posting.

Relationship Building/Warm Pitch — This involves getting to know your pitch a bit first, perhaps even meeting them in person at a conference, local networking event, or through a mutual connection on LinkedIn. Having a common connection can get you in the door, and improves your odds that they’ll consider your blog post.

Here at Verblio, we prefer the second method. One of our favorite ways to reach out these days is through podcasts — and we can sometimes score a guest post to accompany our guest podcast appearance. Not a bad idea, right?

When it comes to what you do though, you’ll have to see what works best! For instance, marketing expert Jeff Bullas recommends a blend of these:

Write three or four round-up style posts

Cultivate strong relationships with experts in your industry

Research the type of blogs they prefer publish

Ensure your content hits home in key areas: topic, headlines, intros, word count (1,000 words + is our recommendation)

Reach out to them with your guest post ideas

Deliver your guest post

Be a pleasure to work with

That’s some sound advice to live by!

Don’t expect to guest post on high-profile blogs immediately, unless you have some really strong connections in your industry. Guest posting takes time to do correctly, so think about what you want to accomplish and work toward it.

How to Write a Guest Blog Post

So how do you write a guest post?

Well, if we’re honest, you should use the same process as any other blog post. Just do it for your guest’s audience, and do it at a high level.

That means keeping a few guest blogging tips top of mind:

Select a topic that will resonate

Do 110% of the keyword research you normally do

Go through an additional level of editing, including the input of other experts if possible

Don’t snooze on SEO optimization

Check out our post on the Anatomy of a Blog Post for a more in-depth look at some of these features.

And last but not least, don’t be afraid to outsource guest blog posts — a process known as ghost blogging (or ghost writing, more commonly).

Guest Blogging + Ghost Blogging

Ghost blogging — or ghost writing — has nothing to do with ghosts… unfortunately.

Rather, it’s the name given to a process wherein you pay someone to write something for you, and then you put your name on it.

I know what you’re thinking. When you read it on paper, ghost blogging sounds a lot like plagiarism — but there’s a few major differences here.

First of all, you (the author) are actively involved in the process. You generate the topic, provide a brief, and weigh in with your expertise in the editorial stages. So in that sense, it’s more of a group project, and you’re handing the writing off to a stronger writer in your group (or one that has more time).

And secondly, it’s a marketing industry-accepted, worldwide practice in business that saves you time, money, and doesn’t equate to a sacrifice in quality. While ghostwriting is eschewed in academic-heavy circles, it’s much more accepted in every other industry.

The key here is to find a ghostwriter that can adequately and accurately portray both your brand and the information you want to share. That means finding a strong writer in your niche, which can add a wrinkle to your efforts.

But think of it this way: when you find a ghostwriter (or multiple writers) that you work well with, you can focus more on trying to find guest blogging opportunities. That’s a significant advantage and a huge timesaver, so it’s worth considering.

And — shameless plug alert — Verblio’s vast melting pot of writers are the perfect place to start looking for ghost blog writers. Check us out!

Blogs That Accept Guest Posts

There are thousands of websites that accept guest posts, so naming all of them for you would be an exercise in futility.

Instead, we want to highlight a few that we (as content marketing nerds) love — and that can help you build a backlink profile that would make an SEO’s eyes pop. Here are our picks:

Forbes

Business Insider

HubSpot

Kissmetrics

MarketingProfs

CoSchedule

Find more here…

We also recommend looking for publications in your industry, as these will have a more relevant audience for your business. And always keep your eyes peeled for guest posting opportunities!

A Guest Blogging Secret that Will Change Your World

Here’s the thing — getting guest posts on a blog is a lot of work.

And if you’re trying to get onto an exclusive blog, you may find yourself under a tight deadline while also on the hook for high-quality content. Oops.

But Verblio can help you change that. If you’re spending most of your time pitching, let our writers handle the content creation. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of (100% custom) articles submitted by our expert writers, and you can focus on building the relationships that get your posts through the door.

Like many of our writers, Kary has a full-time occupation and writes for Verblio in her spare time. She serves as Director of International Sales for Avante Health Solutions (formerly DRE Medical) helping surgeons and hospital owners in 150 different countries access cost-effective medical equipment. Kary is also a Certified International Commerce Specialist and has traveled across the globe for her work, visiting Dubai, London, Mexico City, and even Nairobi. She is currently developing content for SEO-boosting microsites dedicated to some of these locations, along with Avante Philippines, Avante Ecuador, and Avante Nigeria.

Kary at the Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya

In addition to having over 15 years of experience in the medical equipment industry, Kary also holds a master’s degree and a PhD in counseling psychology. She worked previously for the largest managed behavioral healthcare organization in the United States, Magellan Behavioral Health, designing and implementing preventative health programs.

As you may have guessed, much of Kary’s writing for Verblio falls in the healthcare industry. However, her broad experience in sales, commerce, and content creation allow her to excel across several other industries, including business consulting, e-commerce, and marketing.

She is currently working on a 3000-word piece about the transition from batch bioprocessing to continuous bioprocessing. Don’t worry—I had to look that up, too: In brief, bioprocessing refers to the production of biological materials for commercial use or the use of biological processes, such as fermentation, in commercial manufacturing.

Kary isn’t one to shy away from a technical topic: “I have always welcomed a challenge, and my endeavors with Verblio are no exception to this rule.” Kary delights in bringing life to topics that might otherwise risk putting readers to sleep: plastic injection molding, industrial safety regulations, or hydraulic hoses.

Here’s what a happy customer had to say:

Thank you for this post. As always, it exceeded my expectations for the blog. Your writing is exceptional, and you always find a way to make what could be sometimes a dull topic very interesting.

Although Kary works well over 40 hours each week at her full-time job, she also somehow finds the time to complete—and yes, even delight in—tight deadlines that allow her to wow customers with her efficiency. Kary’s content is well crafted, not only in terms of the writing itself, but also in terms of its visual organization and readability. “I enjoy creating beautifully organized copy that aces the eye test,” she says.

I asked Kary to give some advice for customers hoping to attract top writers like her. She gave me three simple things that you can do to keep great writers coming back to write your content:

Take action! “Decline any articles that you know you will not purchase.”

Rate your content. “Assign star ratings to each submission you receive.”

Explain your rating. “Provide a very brief explanation of your rating—even if it sounds harsh. One sentence is fine.”

Kary explained that she chooses who to write for based on these criteria. She’s even willing to take on tougher and more technical topics as long as she knows that the customer will give her feedback that helps her continue to improve her writing. So, the more technical your topics, the more critical it is that you give clear feedback and let writers know quickly whether their content will work for you.

Taking a break from work in Dubai

Outside of working and writing, Kary is also a runner and has completed 3 marathons, so far. She speaks fluent Spanish, which she uses heavily in her daily work in international commerce, and she loves sports, including basketball, football, and horse racing. She’s also a native Kentuckian, so she happily attends the Kentucky Derby every year with her husband, Wes.

Thank you so much to Kary for being an amazing member of our writer community! It has been such a pleasure working with you, and we’ll look forward to seeing more top-notch content from you in the future.

Are you new to Verblio and getting a feel for how things work around here? Or trying hard to take your Verblio game to the next level?

The help pages are a great place to start, but sometimes we writers need a little extra context. I’ve been here a little more than a year, and as a member of the Writer’s Forum, I’ve seen lots of newer writers go through the same “getting acquainted” process I went through not too long ago…and like them, I’ve learned a lot from those who’ve been writing for Verblio for years.

I’m amazed by what I’ve managed to accomplish here in such a short time. I’ve set and surpassed goals, thrown some hissy fits on the forum, cheered as the staff made several writer-suggested changes, and I’ve made a lot of friends and professional connections. I’ve also learned some pretty amazing stuff about everything from hypoallergenic, cruelty-free down pillows to cleaning up after a crime scene.

Thanks to freelance writing, I always have something interesting to say at dinner parties.

(“What did I do today? Well, first I wrote about vaccinations for kittens. Then I wrote a blog post about secondary pest infestations that occur when a human body decomposes in a home that lacks proper climate control. In Florida. In the summer. How was your day?”)

I’ve gone from an average of $60/week in sales to well above $300, and guess what? I’m lazy. I could easily increase my earnings if I set aside more time to write and put more time into researching topics outside my current comfort zone. But hey, I’m not trying to sell you on Verblio; you’re already here. I just want to make things a little easier for you by sharing the best advice I’ve gleaned from my fellow writers.

Taking Advantage of the Forum

Do you want a writer’s thoughts about a particular customer? Need some links to useful writing websites or SEO practices? Do you want to pick the brains of full-time professional bloggers? If you haven’t checked out the forum, you’re missing out on one of Verblio’s biggest assets.

Our online community is a friendly and supportive forum for exchanging ideas, finding inspiration, making connections, and learning about the writing profession. You’ll meet writers from all backgrounds and levels of experience. Staff members—including Verblio’s founders and executives—regularly drop by to make announcements, answer questions, or get the ball rolling on lighthearted topics.

The only rule on the forum is everyone’s required to be respectful of one another, even when we disagree. So if you’ve been turned off by bad behavior and bullying on Reddit forums or Facebook groups, you’ll be pretty happy here!

Choosing the Right Customers

Ask any forum regular and they’ll tell you that newcomers to the platform always want to know how to choose the right requests and the right customers. We’ll get to selecting topics later, but determining customer behavior is the key to being successful here.

Searching for customers

The Jobs page allows you to filter your search by word length, industry, customer name, and keyword. Pretty straightforward stuff, and it’s all outlined in the help pages, too. Familiarize yourself with the search function and results page, and play around with your options. You can search (and sort the page) by keyword, industry, client, and job length category.

Building a customer profile

Now that we’ve addressed the technical stuff, let’s get down to what really matters: How active is the customer, how likely are they to buy our posts, and which ones we should avoid like the plague.

First, get familiar with the layout of the Create Content page. Beyond what you can learn from the contents of the “black box” (containing the customers’ requests), you want to pay attention to the following:

Available credits and credit renewal

Active submissions

Purchases

Declines

Additional Information

Previous comments and reviews

The customer credit system

Verblio’s customers purchase credits, which they then apply to the posts we write. Sometimes, they purchase a whole mess of them at once, while others are on an “autorefresh” schedule: Verblio charges their account on a monthly basis, thus renewing the customer’s credit “allowance.”

If you look above the client’s name, you might see something like this:

For example, a client has “2 posts needed now,” that means they’re able to select and purchase two posts at any time. If that number is zero, the next part of the phrase will tell you when they’ll get more credits, and how many they’ll have to spend.

Customers usually assign topics around the same time their credits renew. Usually. Some will post a ton of topics all at once, even if it would take them months to use all the submitted posts in their queue. (These clients tend to change their minds about wanting these topics after a while, so watch your step here).

Then, there are some customers who will buy extra credits whenever they feel like it so they can snap up particularly awesome posts. We LOVE these clients!

All writing platforms have a strategy, and sometimes we’re stuck doing math (yuck). Fortunately, on Verblio, it’s relatively easy to predict when content might be purchased (or declined) once we understand how the customer buying cycle works.

Client activity (or lack thereof)

Click on “Purchases” to find out when the client last purchased. If it looks like they buy on a regular basis, that’s obviously a plus. If they’ve been racking up credits but haven’t purchased anything in more than two months, trust your gut; three months or more, move on.

If they have a queue (“Submissions” tab) at least three times as long as their available credits—unless you see “scheduled for (date),” which indicates that customers are on the “auto-delivery” program—you might want to find a more active customer.

Some of us write for low-velocity customers because chances are, our content will eventually sell, and there’s often less competition and more time to complete the article. I’ll take the risk if it’s a topic I enjoy, can write without too much effort, and can recycle elsewhere if it dies on the vine.

Be wary of writing time sensitive posts—those that become obsolete after events or holidays—especially for customers who aren’t active; when you do, it’s okay to include [TIME SENSITIVE] in the headline field.

If a customer has a red dot next to their name (on your dashboard), or you see “expires on (date)” at the top of the Create Content page, be very judicious about submitting a post, and only do so if they have more available credits than open topics.

Client comments

There’s a window on the customer’s page with clickable comments that lead to the associated submission. Fewer than half of the customers bother to leave comments, but you’ll get a pretty good idea of their preferences (and attitudes) by scanning their feedback and their previously purchased (or declined) content.

Feedback is a good indicator of how nitpicky a customer is, or what types of articles send them over the moon with sheer joy.

Some of my favorite customers didn’t start out that way. I’ve received a few negative comments on both purchased and declined posts and I adjusted my approach accordingly. One of those customers now specifically requests that I write all of their content, so I can now rely on them purchasing every month.

Star ratings

Sometimes, writers get five-star declines. Other times, folks receive two-star ratings for purchased posts. The star system is mostly for writer egos, or at least that’s what we tell ourselves when we get skunked.

Many customers don’t give reviews or gold stars at all. Don’t take it as a slam against your writing! Just think of all the times you didn’t leave a review for a book you just read, or for that fantastic sushi joint you discovered last weekend.

Most of us agree that dollar signs are all the rating we need, even if we do sniffle a bit when we don’t get extra kudos.

Get the scoop from your Verblio community

Have you written for a client with shocking results? Do you see an erratic mix of comments, from “you’re the best writer ever” to “you should jump off a cliff and die?” You can always search the forum using the customer’s name, or ask fellow writers about their experiences.

Some customers are famous among writers for their behavior (good or bad) but there are always a few of us who succeed even with the most notorious accounts. Are you up for a challenge?

Finding Requests Based on Subject Matter

Verblio has a huge selection of requests from which to choose. If you get tired of cranking out dry, down-the-rabbit-hole posts, you can transition over to easier (or shorter) topics, or try your hand at different industries. Here are some notes about finding requests that you actually want to complete:

General interest requests

These are the most competitive since most everyone can research and write about stuff like “Why Does My Dog Eat Poop?” or “Five Ways to Spruce Up Your Backyard on a Budget.” But they’re also good confidence builders. If your post isn’t selected, chances are you can recycle it to another customer or use it as a sample on your profile.

Industry-specific requests

Sometimes, you’ll find topics that are right up your alley. Yay for you! General topics are very competitive, so if you have professional or personal experience with a particular industry, you could develop a niche here on Verblio.

The staff tries to pair new customers with the right writers, which is why it’s important to fill out those writer surveys we get once in a while. If you find a customer that matches your tone and expertise, feel free to reach out to staff to hook you up.

Stuff that’s over your head… or a worthwhile challenge

If you’re confident in your research skills, you might want to try writing about subjects you know just a little about. A lot of writers here had no clue what blockchain was until they started doing a little digging. Now, a few of those folks know enough about blockchain to have opened up a whole new area of expertise, complete with new writing opportunities.

It’s worthwhile to invest some time in new-to-you subjects. My advice? Read up on the subject, and search out the industry’s go-to publications. Start out with shorter posts until you gain confidence; don’t tackle longer, in-depth articles until you know your stuff. The “fake it ’til you make it” approach isn’t appropriate if the topic requires a lot of dense technical writing and high-level research.

Research, Citation Tips, Plagiarism and Fair Use

Most of our clients want to market themselves as industry thought leaders. They want to promote their blogs as trusted sources of accurate, informative, easy-to-consume content. That means we’ve got to dig up recent data that’s as close to firsthand as possible.

Swimming upstream: Get close to the source

Imagine a salmon traveling from the ocean to a river, then up a series of tributaries until it ends up in the spring-fed creek where it started its life.

That’s how Verblio writers need to approach their research. The closer we get to the source material, the more credible our customers will appear to their audience.

If we find a great article on our client’s subject, does it list sources? Then follow those links. It’s okay, once in a while, to attribute a passage or quote “as reported by (author) in an interview with Joe Schmo in Harvard Review”, especially if that attribution lends credence or context to the data, but all citations should follow AP style, and include hyperlinked text to the source article. (Learn more here.)

It should go without saying that Wikipedia is not considered a credible source. It doesn’t matter if Neil deGrasse Tyson himself went on a coffee bender and edited every astrophysics-related Wikipedia page; if you attribute data to Wikipedia, you’re in for a decline.

Having said that, Wikipedia often has fantastic links to credible sources, and there’s no shame in using the platform as a springboard for inspiration and leads.

Can you think of other outlets you’d avoid citing? If it’s a fluffy, general-audience news site like Huffington Post or Time Magazine (or, God forbid, People) skip it. Keep digging. Major metropolitan newspapers are usually okay (especially if you need a quote on a scientific or statistic-based study that you won’t find in an academic paper) but even still, follow their sources. And try to corroborate everything.

Keep your sources as relevant as possible

Whenever possible, keep it local. If you’re writing for an Australian company, cite Australian sources. Same with North American regions, whenever possible: If you’re writing about wildfire season in southern California, then the Los Angeles Times is a more quotable source than The Washington Post.

Trade associations and newsletters are good resources for industry trends, but be cautious: Never quote or link to a customer’s competitor.

When you’re Googling source material, go to the “Tools” menu and select the categories that bring you results from the past year. While “most recent” studies and polls might be a few years old, you’ll want to avoid referencing anything published more than three or four years ago.

Formatting your quotes and citations

Learn proper formats for citing websites, books, magazines, and research papers.

When including links, select the “New Window” option so as not to take viewers away from the customer’s site.

The blockquote feature (which appears as ” in the editing toolbar) is a useful way to highlight key quotes and points…but don’t overdo it.

Too many quotes will trigger Verblio’s plagiarism checker, and it just looks lazy. Use a mix of direct quotes and paraphrasing, and make sure the article serves as the customer’s authoritative take on the source material. Regurgitated content is, after all, barf.

Some customers prefer a “bibliography” of sources at the end of each post. Be sure to include the source’s entire URL if they do. Lean toward the AP style, rather than academic citation formats.

Understatement Alert! Verblio takes plagiarism seriously!

Proper citation is pretty much the best defense against plagiarism. I ripped off that last sentence from one of Verblio’s awesome staff members, almost word for word (shhh).

But seriously, folks, even if you’ve only got the best intentions in mind, you’ll need to familiarize yourself the nuances of plagiarism, because if you’re caught doing it—accidentally or on purpose—you’re breaking the law and putting you, the platform, and its customers in jeopardy. If you’re busted, Verblio will suspend your account, and the muses of creativity will curse you and thousands of generations of your descendants with writer’s block.

When you submit an article, the platform runs a plagiarism checker and alert you to potential issues, but it’s always best to use your own plagiarism checker before you hit that button. Grammarly has one, as do several academic paper auto-editors. And at the end of the day, know that you can’t fully trust the computer to tell you what is and isn’t plagiarism. You can still be suspended for content that passes the plagiarism checker if your content is still simply a broad paraphrase of another article. Which leads me to…

Know the difference: fair use, copyright infringement, and plagiarism

There’s a lot of confusion about what’s considered “fair use,” even though the phrase is bandied about all the time. The long and short of it is that you need to be judicious with the amount of another writer’s work you quote, how you format your citations, and how you put that writer’s ideas into your own words. Citations won’t always cover your butt, and it’s just plain wrong to reword another writer’s ideas and data and pass them off as your own.

A great resource for clearing the waters is this page from Harvard University’s Office of the General Counsel. For more information about proper citations—and all sorts of other good stuff—we absolutely love Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL).

Adopting a Customer’s Desired Tone

Sometimes the winning difference between two perfectly-composed articles is tone or voice. We see a lot of content rejected because the writers didn’t do their homework on the customer, laying waste to all the research they may have done on the topic itself.

Read previously purchased content and/or the client’s existing blog material to match a customer’s brand identity.

Check out the slider bars for the customer’s preferred tone and target audience.

Don’t use five-dollar words for general audience topics. It’s pretentious, off-putting, and either sends readers away or to Dictionary.com.

Find out if the customer wants you to write from the first-person perspective. When in doubt, don’t.

The most successful writers study previous submissions. It’s mind-boggling how many customer comments include the phrases, “not in my brand voice,” “too wordy,” or “did you even read our guidelines/topic description/blog?”

Completely missing the mark on client’s preferred tone is at least as bad as submitting a poorly-proofed post. Either can get you blocked by the customer.

Formatting Your Posts: “TL;DR” Isn’t Just a Meme

That means “too long; didn’t read.” I had to ask my niece about that one; she used one of my e-mails as an example.

Our customers know that readers don’t want to deal with huge blocks of text. If a post looks overwhelmingly long, especially when viewed on a smartphone, their eyes will cross and they’ll move on. Format your posts into easy-to-consume, scannable sections.

Keep each paragraph to 3-4 sentences.

Learn how to use the correct headers.

Use a block or two of bullet points, but don’t overdo it.

Use captivating introductions that give the reader an idea of what’s in store.

Make sure each post has a readable “flow,” with each section transitioning smoothly to the next.

Wrap up your post with a conclusion that summarizes the article without being repetitive.

Promotional posts with a “Contact Us” insert button above the text editing field usually require a strong call to action (CTA) at the end. (Don’t forget to edit the text of the link to make sure it’s grammatically correct!)

Sometimes, copy formatting is a balancing act between readability and the customer’s preferences. You might have an excellent formatting strategy, but your customer might not be SEO-savvy. When in doubt, refer to the customer’s previously purchased or published posts.

How to Write Blog Headlines That Don’t Suck!

For many of us, headlines are the most aggravating part of writing a solid blog post. They need to score SEO points while snagging the reader’s attention. Headline writing is extra fun (gag!) when the client wants us to include specific keyword strings.

There’s no single formula for writing the perfect headline, but there are lots of great articles on the subject. HubSpot is one of our go-to resources for inbound marketing advice, and Coschedule has a headline analyzer that several of us like to use.

Your target headline word-count should be six to nine words, with the correct capitalization and—hello!—be error-free!

Here are a couple Verblio-approved resources:

How to Write Effective Headlines with CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer

We Studied Hundreds of Blog Post Headlines. Here’s What We Learned.

By the way… the automatic headline that appears in the text editor is just a suggestion. You’ll need to change it before you save your draft; just add a space or ellipses until you’re ready to replace it with your final title.

Proofreading Like a Pro

Have you ever seen those sports videos where runners faceplant just before the finish line? Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, so if you want to bomb out as a Verblio writer, go ahead and post that article without thoroughly checking it over for errors.

If you’re all about the follow-through (or the paycheck), here are some tips for “scrubbing” your post for poor grammar, typos, and inappropriate punctuation.

When you’re finished with your draft, take ten minutes or more to clear your head. I call it “breaking the spell.”

Read your copy out loud. Some writers have their computers read back their posts via “text-to-speech” features; this might work for you. I personally haven’t found one that reads with the right cadence.

Run your copy through at least one document checker in addition to the Verblio editor’s “Review” window. Grammarly is the hands-down winner among our writers, followed by the Hemingway Editor. Grammarly’s desktop installation is more thorough, but its Chrome plug-in is very handy.

Make your corrections, then proof your post one last time before submitting it.

Don’t forget to proofread your headlines and headers!

Customers will reject otherwise fantastic posts because of one or two typos or glaring grammatical errors, and many won’t read beyond the first goof they find. After all, if you can’t bother to read your content, why should they? We see this time and time again when we check out the comments on declined posts, and customers are entitled to complain. They expect professional copy.

Writing for Foreign English-Speaking Customers

Verblio has quite a few U.K. and Aussie clients, and you might run across a Canadian or two. While we speak the same language, many words have different spellings north of the border, across the pond and Down Under. (Color=colour, favorite=favourite, Starbucks=Tim Horton’s). Punctuation and grammar may differ, as well. Here are some tips for writing in the Queen’s English:

Install and use the Language Tool Chrome extension. It’s clunky, but it works.

Use country-specific sources and statistics whenever possible.

Become familiar with the country’s vernacular. Read a few blog posts published on the client’s site to glean industry-specific terms, and feel free to look up articles and slang guides written for American travelers. Just don’t write like an American tourist! Take care not to create a post that rivals the Crocodile Dundee script. (Crikey, mate. That would be a fair-dinkum cock-up!)

Don’t forget to use the metric system and local currency.

A note on millennial-speak

We’re seeing a lot of requests for articles targeting the millennial generation. As far as we know, there aren’t any good plug-ins for translating millennial-speak. If online cultural websites can’t help you out, we “hundo p” suggest making like Jane Goodall and studying them in their natural environment. Take along plenty of avocado and toast for ease of acceptance.

Brenda Godinez

Completing Edit Requests: Because Love Ain’t Always Unconditional

Verblio recently added a new system by which customers can easily mark passages with requests for changes. When your post receives an edit request, that usually means the customer likes your work and your style well enough to spend the time to help you dial it in.

Some customers go overboard, asking for entire rewrites that are a complete departure from their original topic description. Sometimes, they ask for additional content that surpasses their official word count category. You can choose to decline some or all of the edits, and then the customer can decide whether or not to purchase the final post.

I see edit requests as an opportunity to better understand the customer’s preferences, and to let them know how well I translate their ideas into the “perfect” (for them, anyway) content. And an edit request is always better than a flat-out decline.

Handling Rejection: Sometimes It’s You, Sometimes It’s Them

If you haven’t read Stephen King’s “On Writing,” you really should. Not only will you become a better writer, you’ll feel a lot better when a customer declines your work. King nearly suffocated under piles of rejection letters before he struck gold with “Carrie.”

You’re going to get rejections. Period. Once you’re really up and running here on Verblio, you’ll probably have a rejection rate of six to ten percent. That number will probably be higher when you’re just starting out.

Don’t worry about it, though. Unless your rejections come with negative comments or your percentage skyrockets out of the stratosphere, you’re actually on the right track if you get a few declines now and then. Here’s why:

Uncharted territory: If you’re unsure about the tone and preferences of a customer that’s new to Verblio, you’re taking a risk when you submit their first post. Good for you for being brave!

Competition makes us better writers: Someone else submitted a post on the same topic, and the customer chose theirs over yours. No problem; study the style and tone of the “winning” post, and try again with the same customer later.

Topic No Longer Needed: Customers change their minds. It doesn’t happen that often, but it’s frustrating when it does. It has nothing to do with your writing.

The Rebound: Recycling Your Posts

If your article expires or is declined, you can find a new home for it with another Verblio customer. If you press the “recycle” symbol next to your post on your dashboard, a suggested customer will appear.

Don’t automatically submit your post to that customer! Personally, I’m always amused by the random pairings. I usually open up a new window and search for customers by industry, then submit the rejected post. Your submission likely won’t match up with their open topics, but with a little finesse, you can make it work.

Make sure you’ve removed any links or references to the previous customer.

Make any adjustments necessary to better suit the new customer’s listed preferences.

Verify that your article’s word count meets or exceeds that of the new customer.

Take one last shot at proofreading.

Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place? Contact Staff!

If you’ve ever written for other platforms and attempted to seek staff guidance, you likely felt as if you fell into a canyon where nobody could hear you scream. Before you reach for that flimsy Leatherman knock-off and start hacking away at your writing hand, take heart; Verblio has a team of enthusiastic staff members ready to help. Here’s when it’s appropriate (and encouraged) to reach out to writers@verblio.com:

You haven’t found a solution in the Help section, or by posting your question to (or searching) the forum (where at least one staff member checks in throughout the day).

It’s either not appropriate to ask on the forum, or too client-specific.

The customer’s topic description is too vague, and you need staff to request more information or clarification.

The customer is requesting a word count outside their account range (The staff might negotiate a one-time word count adjustment or a two-part series).

Sometimes we get tired of staring at a customer’s page, wondering if and when they’ll pull the trigger and buy our posts. We might attempt to telepathically persuade the customers to log on, use their credits, and clear their mile-long queues. What we shouldn’t do is request that the staff pesters our customers to make a move.

Verblio account managers have a system for maintaining customer engagement, but they have no control over when a client will decide to use or renew their credits… no matter how many chickens they sacrifice in Hoodoo rituals. But eventually, most posts sell. If they expire, there’s a good chance you can find another home for yours.

You Won’t Win If You Don’t Play the Game: Tips for Success

Once you’ve read the help pages, become acquainted with Verblio’s platform features, and waded into the forums, the best advice we writers can give you is to set goals and write as much as you can. Read up on inbound marketing and refine your blogging skills. Read other writers’ work and cultivate new clients.

Hearts

Once you earn “preferred writer” status with a few clients, take advantage of the topic proposal feature to give yourself more breathing room to write on your favorite subjects. The exclusive three-day period lets us write without the pressure some of us feel when we’re trying to compete with simultaneous submissions.

Writer’s queue

Try to build up a solid queue, especially if you’re writing for customers with varying credit refresh dates. When articles sell, top off that “future earnings” number. When you have a stockpile of pending articles, you’ll have a more stable income and you’re less anxious about selling articles tomorrow that you only wrote today.

Leveling up

Once you hit Level 4, things really start rolling. Even those of us who are eligible for 1500-word topics rely on 600-word posts for our bread and butter. And just because you’re still at Level 3 doesn’t mean you’re any less talented and skilled than those who are in the double-digits.

Find your own rhythm

Everyone has their own goals, and we all write at our own pace. Don’t be too rough on yourself if you’re not cranking out 5000 words a day, or if it takes a while to master the system. You’ll get the hang of it.

We’ve All Been There…And We’re Here for You! Each of us was new here at one point, and every one of us still needs encouragement and advice now and again. I can’t stress enough the importance of the Verblio community for platform writing success. Use it to your personal and professional advantage. The truth is, if you’ve read this far, you already have; most of what I’ve learned and shared here, as well as my success on this platform, is thanks to my fellow Verblio writers. I’m just paying it forward!

But first, poetry from a ten year old

As a child, I was exceptionally good at rhyming and making up fake song lyrics.

I had no idea this would one day serve me as copywriter for a company called Verblio. Now I get to send business emails with subject lines like this:

Since everything is impermanent, we invoked the ominous TIK TOKING of the clock to try and inspire bold moves.

A decade before Tik Tok the app, there was “TiK ToK” the song.

The delightfully trashy first single from Kesha (formerly stylized Ke$ha) opened with the line, “Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy”, which, according to Wikipedia,

came from an experience where Kesha woke up surrounded by beautiful women, to which she imagined P. Diddy being in a similar scenario.

Bless you, Kesha. Then we brought it back around to Aladdin in the final reminder email.

And the sign off….

For those of you not born yet or without cable from 1984-1995, you might not know about Robin Leach and his iconic show:

After touring the luxury homes of actors, pro athletes, and business moguls, Leach ended each episode with a wish for his viewers: “champagne wishes and caviar dreams.”

Verblio: the caviar of content.

…

February saw the debut of the Verblio Verbcast, our bi-monthly email where we share all the verbs that propel your content to action.

It’s a verb, it’s a plane

We gave you our editorial calendar template, a gorgeously organized tool of content creation power, plus other helpful content about content and content creation.

Why the subject line “A soothing sense of control”?

Because the editorial calendar is a spreadsheet, and spreadsheets spread joy. Spreadsheets make me feel safe in uncertain times. This blog post started out as a spreadsheet, actually.

…

From the bi-monthly Verbcast to other bi things…

“Vid-curious” is a take on “bi-curious”, the mythical phase every college girl supposedly goes through where she wants to make out with all of her girlfriends. When we debuted our video product in March, we tantalized the list with this very softly suggestive subject line and the promise of a free sample video.

NO, NOT THAT KIND.

Quick copywriting aside, adding “curious” to words that rhyme with “bi” is kind of fun:

Back to the emails.

A spicy subject line gave way to a salty email, featuring everyone’s favorite Turkish chef and 2017 internet sensation Salt Bae:

From there, we reminded folks about the offer by invoking 80s Swedish hair metal:

Sadly, no one took us up on the offer for two free videos.

…

In August we serenaded the list with two (2!) distinct stanzas of rhyming verse. Give me a theme, and I will riff.

In this case, on the ease and beauty of Verblio’s duplicate requests feature (basically a tool that makes it easy to dupe a request and brief our writers).

For non-customers, we waxed poetic about the frustration of flaky freelancers:

“A repeated and frustrating circumstance” sums up so much about the modern experience, doesn’t it?

…

Freelance writer frustration seemed to hit a nerve, so we spun it into a whole campaign based on a made up condition: PFWD.

We made a fake pharmaceutical drug ad and I cast my English Bulldog, Violet, alongside Verblio CEO Steve Pockross.

Don’t they make a great pair?

Did you know that prescription drug logos are incredibly low-rent and fake looking?

I wanted to create something equally weird for our high-quality content cure.

It’s not a prescription, it’s a SUB-scription.

…

Right before the holidays, I was medicating my own depression with hours of holiday baking shows on Hulu. I learned that the stale-looking chocolate log served at holiday parties is called a Yule Log, and this gave me an idea.

Yum.

…

Our big holiday campaign was feeling exceedingly boring when Kali, Verblio’s content wizard, suggested searching “weird holiday” on a stock photos site to jazz things up.

This turned out to be a goldmine.

That “urgency” search also gave us the photo that became the basis of the third and final email in the holiday series:

Not everyone was a fan. Someone replied calling it “Pathetically cheap pseudo-erotic BS.” Then the following:

You know this box gets thousands of emails, your vapid lazy sh1t is by far the worst.

We’re not for everyone. Happy new year.

Editor’s note: this post was originally published in October 2018 but has been updated to reflect Michelle’s accomplishments as of May 2020 and include some brief updates from her since this post’s last writing. Spoiler alert: she’s still writing up a (hilarious) storm, turning out as much high-quality content as ever!

For this edition of Verblio’s freelance writer spotlight, I’ve had a ball highlighting Michelle Halsey, a humorist with a flair for the abnormal and a talent for consistently creating 5-star content.

Here’s a quick snapshot of Michelle’s Verblio stats:

Time with Verblio: 3 years

Total posts sold: 687

Top industries: Digital marketing, gardening, crime scene cleanup/biohazard remediation, supplemental insurance

Expertise: Marketing, horticulture, outdoor recreation, event planning, rural issues, snark (!!!)

Since joining Verblio in April of 2017, Michelle’s focused on writing long-form content projects (1,500+ words), with 95% of those receiving perfect 5-star reviews. She has rapidly found (and successfully wooed) some of the weirdest and most niche clients on our site, including a crime scene cleanup operation and an avant-garde Australian honest media company (yeah, it’s a mouthful).

Michelle majored in creative writing and journalism and has since worked as a writer and editor at a slew of different publications from a daily newspaper to a monthly lifestyle magazine, as well as at a PR & advertising firm. She has written and managed content for a retail business, in addition to editing and contributing to a national retail trade publication. Though she’s a bit camera-shy, her partner, who’s a professional comic artist, created this amazing drawing of Michelle hard at work:

At Verblio, Michelle’s favorite clients are those who take their marketing seriously, but not too seriously: “Your audience wants to experience a genuine, interpersonal connection with your brand. Throw in a bit of levity whenever it’s appropriate,” she says. And she has definitely got a point—content that’s engaging helps potential customers stay on your pages longer and signals to Google that you’re providing value to your readers.

One of Michelle’s regular clients is a family-owned heirloom seed company that realized they needed to amp up their inbound marketing and set themselves apart in a competitive industry. What they didn’t know—until they received a submission from Michelle—was that a bit of irreverence was just what they needed to win over their audience. With a playful tone and a healthy dose of cultural references, Michelle turns 1,500-word blog posts about cinquefoil and hyssop into entertaining and even guffaw-inducing romps. One thing she’s dead serious about? Research, cross-referencing, and citing the most reliable botany references available.

That customer-snagging article—about catnip—offered advice for building a “grow operation” just in case this feline “drug” becomes scheduled by the government. “This article is hilarious!!” the customer raved. “25/10 rating seriously great job! My visitors will love this one!” Spoiler: it involves cat gangs and street-smart puppers swimming in cash.

A little compassion can also go a long way in industries where the content space is crowded or the topics themselves are drier and more difficult than the Marathon des Sables (don’t ask, it’s an ultra-marathon across the Sahara desert…).

Another of Michelle’s regular clients is a biohazard remediation company. When asked about the strangest topic she’d ever had, Michelle replied:

I don’t really think it gets stranger than writing, in detail, about how a human body putrefies when it’s been left in a hot apartment for several weeks… or months.

Gross. But Michelle isn’t deterred. She says that writing fiction extensively has helped her understand how to create content for clients in tough industries and explain what they do without turning away their potential clients:

Some of my most loyal customers require a highly-empathetic approach to extremely sensitive subjects. When you develop fictional characters you figure out how to see things from different points-of-view.

Marketing pros follow this principle when they help their clients create buyer personas, and yes. Michelle’s written a ton of articles on the subject for our many agency clients.

Michelle thinks of this a bit like Method Writing, where you try to inhabit the mind of your characters in order to portray them more realistically. Except, in this case, she’s trying to get into the mind of a reader in need of a body removal service. Not an easy gig! She says that the whole ‘method writing’ thing makes her boyfriend a bit nervous when she’s writing about murder clean-up (“…or wedding planning, for that matter,” she quips).

(What? Did you think I was going to add an image of a body clean-up?)

Incidentally, I did make the mistake of asking Michelle what she had learned while working for Verblio.

Did you know that an adult blowfly can smell blood from a mile away? Well, now you do! Enjoy your lunch!

Yes, from nematodes to narcosubmarines, Michelle has done quite an odyssey through some of the more unusual topics requested by our customers. She says that she comes by this honestly—both the humor and the horror:

A family friend bought me one of those flower-covered blank books when I was maybe seven, and I filled it with horrifying stories about witches, dragons, and cauldrons full of eyeballs… Not long after—fourth grade, maybe—a schoolmate and I began writing really off-color skits for our drama class. We had a little coaching from her dad, who was a well-known humor columnist. As a result of our last production, we got a whole lot more ‘coaching’ from our principal.

Today, Michelle lives in a small mountain town and loves to spend time playing in the outdoors, when she gets the chance: fishing, hiking, kayaking, archery, shooting, and even skijoring! If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically nordic skiing with a 4-legged assist:

Though she has lived in big cities, too, Michelle says that she much prefers her small-town home, which she refers to as the “world’s worst trailer park with the world’s best view.” She (allegedly) makes a top-notch chicken pot pie casserole and consumes an inordinate number of podcasts while working on her property, building fences, and clearing trees. A few podcast favorites include Snap Judgment, Behind the Bastards, and Dumb People Town. She also works with several organizations that provide support to survivors of domestic abuse.

Thank you so much to Michelle for being an outstanding part of our writer community. If you’re hoping to work with talented writers like Michelle, drop us a line! We’ll be happy to help you find the perfect person to pen your next piece of content, whether it’s about biohazards or business analytics.

For March’s Freelance Writer Spotlight, we’re happy to introduce you to a new addition to our team: former attorney (and current hedgehog father) Tyler Theisen.

Tyler’s Life at Verblio

Here’s a quick snapshot of Tyler’s Verblio stats:

Time with Verblio: 5 months

Total posts sold: 66

Top industries: Legal, financial, home improvement

Expertise: Law, taxes, speechwriting, weightlifting, Russian literature

Since Tyler Theisen started writing for Verblio in October of last year, 96% of his customer-rated posts have received 4 or 5 stars and he’s been named a “Preferred Writer” for an impressive 36 different subscriptions. His acceptance rate is currently at 99%.

Tyler says that he enjoys working on legal and financial topics since he has professional experience in those realms, but that he also covers a pretty broad range of subjects, including appliance repair, medical conditions, politics, tech industry news, industrial manufacturing, and social issues.

Here are some topics that he has recently tackled for our customers:

What to do if you’re assigned court-ordered treatment?

Highlights, features, and benefits of using JaguarPC.

The ins and outs of taxation for real estate investors.

Active shooter training tips for emergency responders.

Tyler’s career has been varied, to say the least, which may explain why he’s comfortable tackling so many different types of topics. “I have a low professional attention span,” he says.

Outside of Verblio

Before law school, Tyler earned a Master’s degree as well as a B.A. in Russian Literature from the University of Montana in Missoula. He practiced law in Montana, but eventually decided to retire and move into a full-time career as a freelance writer. He has also worked as a property manager, marketing consultant, bookkeeper, hotel agent, and even as an ESL tutor.

Tyler describes himself now as a “retired attorney and full-time goofball residing in beautiful Lolo, Montana with my wife and far too many dogs.” His not-so-little family includes six dogs, seven chickens, a giant tortoise, and a hedgehog! Yep, a hedgehog.

(Photo by Piotr Łaskawski on Unsplash)

He says that being an attorney helped him develop a writing style that is “analytical and persuasive,” but that ultimately, law was not the career for him.

I quickly learned I didn’t much care for court rooms or mediating personal disputes; a full-time career spent in an adversarial system starts to wear you down a bit, and I’m very glad to have a career now that lets me help others build positive, productive enterprises.

“Also,” he is sure to add, “I love lawyer jokes.”

Why Tyler Theisen Loves Being a Writer

Tyler says that his favorite thing about being a writer is getting to explore different disciplines and research new topics. Just to throw in a little plug for curiosity and openness, HubSpot agrees that this is the first trait you should look for in a freelance writer, who needs to be able to present a fresh perspective on your business and industry.

And Tyler has certainly gone on some thematic explorations with Verblio. He says that so far he has written a short essay on the history of Canadian beer and a primer for diagnosing, treating, and preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (“which has come in very handy for this line of work!” he quips).

He tells customers not to be afraid to work with writers who may be less experienced as freelancers:

Some of the most brilliant work I’ve encountered has been authored by writers with small portfolios, and you may end up with a phenomenal resource for your enterprise that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. …Less-experienced writers are always excited to receive your interest, and will likely go the extra mile to make sure you’re getting…the best product for your needs.

Besides Writing

Outside of his writing career, Tyler Theisen loves spending time with his extensive “animal family” and says he and his wife plan to adopt some goats, sheep, and horses in the near future. His wife owns a small business as a dog trainer, where Tyler also helps out from time to time.

When he’s not lifting weights or gaming, he might be found doing some DIY repairs on his house or — most likely — reading. His most recent recommendation? Stephen King’s Four Past Midnight.

Four Past Midnight is by far my favorite collection, and includes several of the best-composed stories I’ve ever read. Highly recommended (if you don’t mind some less-than-merry subject matter, that is — it’s still Stephen King!).

Lawyer, avid reader, rural Montanan. Think you’ve got Tyler all figured out? Nice try. He says:

People are usually surprised to learn that I am very interested in the history & culture of tattooing, and have extensive tattoos myself.

Tyler and his wife also love to travel internationally: they recently returned home from a 3-week tour through Iceland, Scotland, and the Faroe Islands. (Take me with you next time!)

I asked Tyler if he had anything else to share, and here’s what he said:

I’m just happy to finally be able to say I love my job, and I’m thankful for the opportunity Verblio’s given me to develop my career as a writer.
